June 18, 2025 2:00-3:00 PM ET
Join Sophie Gilbert, Ph.D., of Vibrant Planet, and Ryan Sarsfield of the Environmental Policy Innovation Center for a general introduction to biodiversity credits and nature markets for a preview of the short course at the ESA Annual Meeting on August 15, “Biodiversity Credit Markets: Policy and Practice for Ecologists”.
This introductory webinar will preview a more in-depth short course on this dynamic topic, and will include a general overview of biodiversity credit markets and similar approaches, contextualize their new and growing role in generating conservation outcomes, and explain how these markets link to the mitigation of ecological impacts and corporate ESG strategy.
The overview will discuss the fast-changing policy context of these markets, as well as the emerging integrity principles and methodological requirements for biodiversity credit project implementation in the field. Current debates and perceptions of the market among different stakeholder groups will be addressed, including offsetting, perception of risk, links to carbon and other markets, and the role that ecological and scientific expertise can play.
